Game Over!

Game Over- I’m done playing.

What game, you ask?

You know, the game where you die and we all have to go on with life without you.
You know the game.

The game where we plan your funeral, have people over, say nice things about you, and then go home.

It was fun for awhile-
you know the part - don't you? The part where we go through each and every holiday and figure out a way to do it so it hurts the least?
You know what I’m talking about- don’t you?

It’s the game of pretend.

Let me describe it for you-

We pretend you’re dead and go through all the motions. We have a nice ceremony, some flowers, a few tears. We go to someone’s house and eat. We look at nice pictures of you and nod to each other.
It’s the game of pretend.
Pretending you’re dead.

Now, it’s been six months. I’m done playing. The game has gotten old. Come back. Come out of hiding. I’ve had enough.
I’m done watching Rocky look for you at the door.
I’m done helping my sister move.
I’m done seeing your sisters bravely get through momentous events without you.
Enough.
The game is over.
You can come back now.
I know it’s a pretend game.
It has to be.
You aren’t really dead.
You just wanted to see how we’d fair without you.
We did a good job. We planned a good funeral. We did the best we could.
Rocky looks for you every time the door creaks.
Enough is enough.
Come back to us now.
The pretend game is over.
I want it to end.
Game over- I’m done playing.
What game, you ask?
You know- the game of pretend.
We pretend your gone and go on living without you.

Cathy,
You always know how to express exactly what we are all thinking and feeling. I've been fed up with this game for quite a while as most of us have been. We all miss him so much. Not an hour goes by that I don't think about him and my heart just hurts so bad knowing I can't call him or see him or talk to him. Thanks for always knowing what to say and how to say it. Love you. ~Mich
